Unclaimed Property Kiosk
The Russell County Public Library is excited to be collaborating with the Virginia Department of the Treasury's Unclaimed Property Division to launch an interactive search kiosk, providing citizens with more ways to search for and reclaim unclaimed funds.
These kiosks provide citizens with a secure and convenient method to search for potential lost money for themselves and family members, offering direct access to the user-friendly website of the Virginia Treasury Unclaimed Property Division. In November, the Russell County Public Library will install this new kiosk in their branch, enabling libraries to play a vital role in reuniting rightful owners with their unclaimed funds. As trusted resources, libraries significantly enhance the credibility of this initiative.
In fiscal year 2025, the Unclaimed Property Division achieved a record-breaking year in returning unclaimed assets to Virginians. A total of over $118 million was disbursed, representing over 313,000 asset accounts. This marks the highest amount returned in a single fiscal year, reflecting an impressive 38.7% increase compared to the previous year. Citizens who have ever resided at a Virginia address are encouraged to visit the
free website www.vaMoneySearch.gov to search for unclaimed property reported in their name.
Virginia’s Consumer Protection Law mandates that businesses send letters to account owners and if these accounts remain unclaimed after a designated time, they are classified as unclaimed property and transferred to the state, relieving the businesses of financial liability.
Virginia holds the property as the custodian until the rightful owner, or heir, files a claim. Unclaimed property can include various types of asset accounts such as inactive bank accounts, uncashed checks, refunds, securities, unpaid wages, insurance policy proceeds, etc.
This is a free public service. Citizens are advised to be cautious of unauthorized fee-based services and are encouraged to work directly with Treasury staff to claim their unclaimed property or visit Virginia Treasury’s free website at www.vaMoneySearch.gov.
