Get Cozy This Winter with Hygge

A tall, lit candle and a mug sit surrounded by a blue scarf

A candle, a warm drink and cozy scarf or throw spell hygge

Join the Russell County Public Library (RCPL) to get cozy this winter with hygge. Hygge is a Danish word (pronounced hoo-ga) rooted in the idea of well-being. Hygge is making ourselves and our space safe and cozy.

Each week the library will share a short “hygge” video or website on our Facebook page and website. You can pick up a companion activity or craft to go along with our weekly hygge theme at either branch library. Our activities are appropriate for children.

Hygge doesn’t mean spending money. Take pleasure in gentle, simple things and be content in our space. Think comfort food and candles and blankets. RCPL will help you achieve hygge this winter.

Week 1: January 10

Let’s start with a nature journal. Despite the weather, get outside and absorb solar rays. Experiencing nature can decrease stress, and listening to birdsong can improve your mood. You can enjoy and record or sketch the natural world from indoors if the weather isn’t welcoming. You don’t need to be an artist; you can just make simple drawings and write down what you see in words.

Staying with the theme of cozy, January is National Hot Tea Month. Try a cup of hot tea on us this week. You can take it plain or add a sweetener (honey is good for the throat) or milk, or even your favorite spice!
