The Russell County Public Library
Board of Trustees toured the former home and property of Gaynelle Lockhart
Albert on August 17, 1999. They were joined by County Supervisors, Danny
Brown and Bob Keene, and Honaker Town Council’s treasurer Cindy Hale.
Nancy Albert Wolf, who inherited the property from her mother and donated
it to Russell County for the purpose of establishing a branch library,
conducted the tour and gave a history of the house and grounds. This was a
first look at the property for several members of the Library Board, who
were charged with making decisions concerning a branch library.
The Friends of Russell County Public
Library held a meeting in Honaker at the Albert House on September 13,
1999, at 4:00. President Diane Tomlinson and Publicity Chair Mike Lowe
represented the Friends Executive Board. After a tour of the
house and property, the group moved to the meeting room at the Bank of
Honaker to listen to suggestions and concerns regarding a public library
in Honaker. Several community residents registered to join the
"local" Friends library "support" group.
A branch library committee was formed and officers were elected at this
time. This committee focused primarily on ways and means of supporting a
public library in Honaker. For information about the committee's
activities, contact Carolyn Puckett,
who is committee chair - Address
P.O. Box 2154, Honaker, VA 24260. Other
committee officers include: Diane Fuller - Vice Chair; Kathleen
Taylor - Secretary; Tommy Taylor - Treasurer; Patsy Sample -
Hospitality.
For almost 2 years the Honaker Friends of the Library, this
committee of the Russell County Friends of the Library, raised money. And
all the hard work paid off. In the spring 2001 renovation of the Honaker
Community Library began. AND..... The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony was October 7, 2001, 2-4 pm! In addition to the hard work of the
Honaker Friends and the donations of many generous individuals and groups,
the Honaker Community Library was awarded a grant by the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation. This grant provided computers, enabling the Library to
offer Internet access to patrons, as well as software and training.
Despite this grant and the many generous gifts, the Library still has many
needs. Contact the Honaker Friends of the Library or the Russell
County Public Library if you can make a contribution.
What Will $1.00 Buy?
At the Honaker Library
Open House in 1999 a young boy came to the Albert House i.e. library and
toured the building. His bright, inquisitive eyes sparkled as he asked
questions about the library. His interest was contagious, and it was a
pleasure to talk with him and answer his questions. He carefully studied
every room, obviously mentally envisioning stacks of books, computer
centers and all the interesting, exciting things a library brings to an
active 12 year old mind. At the end of the informal tour, he thanked me
politely and left. Later in the evening he returned and sought me out.
Taking my hand, he placed a dollar bill in it with these words, "I
want to give this money to help build a library here in Honaker. Someday,
I want to bring my children here. I’ll be able to tell them that I
helped build this library."
With a sense of having been given a glimpse of
something of great impact I accepted his crumpled dollar and thought about
the insight and generosity of this child. If only we adults could be so
open and genuine.
